Matchette Road Closure Proposed

Members of the Save Ojibway Group want Windsor councillors to take action to protect the Ojibway Nature Reserve after the Ontario Municipal Board approved zoning for a big box development nearby.

If the development moves forward the group will ask council to close Matchette Rd. to reduce the harm of increased traffic to the endangered species in the area.

"It will prevent the traffic from impacting and having a cumulative effect on the park, on its rare vegetation and globally endangered plant ecosystem as well as the species," says organizer Nancy Pancheshan. Pancheshan says this is the last resort to protect the area. "We've got a new council, a lot of council that is supportive of a 20-year vision that includes protecting our largest piece of natural heritage so I'm confident they will consider that," says Pancheshan.

More than 100 people gathered at a rally in City Hall Square to voice their concerns over the OMB decision Monday night prior to the regular Windsor City Council meeting.
