A Canada Revenue Agengy scam is circulating again in Windsor and this time messages are being left on potential victims' answering machines.
After several complaints, Windsor police are issuing a warning saying the CRA will never leave any personal information in a message. When in doubt call them back directly at 1-800-267-6999.
The revenue agency also doesn't ask for debts to be paid by using Visa gift cards, as some of these scams do.
The CRA requesting personal information via email is another red flag that the person on the other end isn't legitimate, police say.
When in doubt police say ask yourself these questions:
- Am I expecting additional money from the CRA?
- Does this sound too good to be true?
- Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return?
- Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me?
- How did the requester get my email address?
- Am I confident I know who is asking for the information?
