Amherstburg Workers Set To Strike At Midnight

Officials with the Town of Amherstburg and the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers are meeting with a mediator in a last-minute bid to head off a strike.

Unionized workers are set to walk off the job at 12:01am Friday morning if the two sides can't reach a deal.

IBEW Local 636 Business Manager Brian Manninger is still hopeful they can, but admits the contents of a letter sent out by CAO John Miceli concern him.

"He says it's not a concessionary agreement. It truly is a concessionary agreement. There are concessions all the way through everything they tabled," he says. "He's alluding to the fact that there are wage increases there. There's nothing on the table."

Manniger says if they don't have an agreement at midnight, there is a possibility officials will agree to extend the strike deadline.

Last week, members backed strike action by a margin of 98%. Last November, a similar vote yielded a unanimous vote in favour.

IBEW Local 636 represents 55 workers who work at town hall, and employees who maintain the roads, the water distribution system and parks.
