Ten Worst Intersections In Windsor

The corner of Banwell Rd. at E.C. Row Exwy. may have the most crashes in the City of Windsor, but drivers have a greater risk of getting into an accident at County Rd. 42 and Lauzon Pkwy.

That's according to the latest statistics available.

A report compiled in 2013 says there were 125 collisions at Banwell Rd. and westbound E.C. Row, but when traffic volumes are taken into account, there were only 1.3 crashes for every 1,000,000 vehicles.

That risk increased to 1.56 collisions for every 1,000,000 vehicles at County Rd. 42 and Lauzon.

Windsor police officers continue to direct traffic Wednesday morning, after a multi-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of the EC Row Exwy. at Dominion Blvd. February 12, 2014. Windsor's Executive Director of Operations Dwayne Dawson says a number of factors can make one intersection riskier than another.

"From speed to traffic volumes; sight lines are often a concern when trying to make turns. Time of day, road conditions and even the type of intersection; when a local street is meeting a collector, and you're trying to cross multiple lanes of traffic," he says.

When it comes to unsignaled intersections, Dougall Ave. at Ouellette Pl. takes the crown with 78 collisions.

"We've experienced a very high volume of collisions at that location," says Dawson. "It's part of the Central Box assessment that's going on."

That study could provide city council with recommendations this spring.

Windsor police cite the following signalized intersection for having the most crashes in 2014:

  • County Rd. 42 at Lauzon Pkwy.
  • Pelissier St. at Wyandotte St. W
  • McHugh St. at Lauzon Rd.
  • Banwell Rd. at E.C. Row Exwy. westbound
  • Central Ave. at E.C. Row Exwy eastbound on-ramp
  • Crawford Ave. at Wyandotte St. W
  • Lauzon Pkwy at Tranby Ave.
  • Campbell Ave. at College Ave.
  • Lauzon Pkwy at S.Service Rd./Twin Oaks Dr.
  • Provincial Rd. at 6th Conc.
Dawson says the city does take into account the number of traffic accidents at an intersection when planning road work. There's no placeholder in the five-year capital plan for County Rd. 42 at Lauzon Pkwy., but there is an environmental assessment underway for County Rd. 42.

Windsor plans to spend $127-million on road improvements over the next five years, including $19.6-million in 2016.
