Border Guards Find Gun, Rings, Porn

Canadian border guards were busy last month laying several charges, seizing suspected child porn, undeclared diamond rings and a loaded handgun that accidentally fell out of a man's vehicle.

A Detroit man made a wrong turn and arrived in Canada via the Ambassador Bridge on January 13. He was sent to secondary inspection where his door was slightly open and officers say an "object" fell out.

The Canada Border Services Agency say that object was a loaded handgun. The 21-year-old was arrested and handed over to Windsor police.

The man plead guilty to possession of illegally imported goods and was sentenced to 17 months in jail and three years probation.

In a separate incident two days earlier, a 44-year-old London resident was arrested and charged for allegedly trying to smuggle suspected child porn across the border.

At the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, border guards were busy with two separate instances of pricey undeclared jewelry.

On January 15, a North York resident failed to declared a 2.51-carat diamond ring worth $42,758. His ring and vehicle were seized. No charges were laid and the traveler paid to get his ring and vehicle back.

Two weeks later, border guards ran into an undeclared 2.02-carat diamond ring and two other rings valued at $16,000, which were seized from two Thronhill, Ontario residents. Officers say they found empty jewelry boxes and receipts in the vehicle.

No charges were laid and the items were returned after the fines were paid.

Border guards at the tunnel also found $16,000 cash, 3 g of pot and fake IDs from three U.S. travelers who made a wrong turn on January 21. The money was seized as suspected proceeds of crime and they were escorted back to U.S. border officials.
