Princess Street Permanent Closure

Part of Princess St. in Leamington will be closed to traffic in the near future.

Council voted to close Princess St. between Mill St. and Setterington St. in front of the newly developed Central 33 building.

The building houses Windsor-Essex County Children's Aid, the Windsor and Essex County Health Unit and City of Windsor social services employees providing a central location for these services in the county.

Building owner Carl Grossi says they requested the street closure to create a green space in front of the building.

"It's going to be a phenomenal beautiful looking building and it's going to be an absolutely wonderful area for them to relax and enjoy and have beautiful sceneries" says Grossi.

Some near by residents and business owners voiced concerns over accessibility but ultimately council decided this move creates the atmosphere they are hoping for in uptown Leamington.

"Their idea fit so well with what we are contemplating, for the uptown core it was just us saying 'really? You're going to do what we plan on doing anyway?'" says Mayor John Paterson.

Council is also considering changing some one-way streets in the area over the next month which may address some concerns from residents.

The owners are hoping to have the green space completed by the summer.
