It once hosted the likes of Al Capone and Babe Ruth, but soon Abars in Windsor's east end may be no more.
The once-popular bar on Riverside Dr. E and Lauzon Rd. has been closed since November after a dispute between the owners, the Canadian Transit Company which also owns the Ambassador Bridge, and its tenants. Its history dates back to the time of prohibition in the U.S.
The windows may be boarded up, but city councillor Joanne Gignac says residents nearby are concerned.
"I have received complaints that there are openings into the building."
Windsor's Heritage Planner, John Calhoun says there are regular inspections.
He says the city first received an application to demolish the building back on March 30. It was completed just last Friday, and now city council has until June 15 under the Heritage Act to consider demolition.
