Deal Could Recall Laid Off Accucaps Workers

The president of Unifor Local 195 says laid off workers at Accucaps Industries in Windsor could be recalled under a new three-year collective agreement.

Gerry Farnham says it wasn't an easy deal to reach because the pharmaceutical company wanted to merge some worker classifications so it could bid on a new contract.

"There are approximately 40 on layoff to be able to come back to work as well as the possibility of having some new hirees," he says.

Farnham isn't sure how many new positions could open up.

Three weeks ago, the workers gave their union a 100% strike mandate, and Farnham credits that strong backing for being able to reach a deal with the company.

Wednesday, the workers, ratified the contract by a margin of 66%.

The deal will also award the workers with a wage increase and improved benefits.
