Assisting Those With Mental Health Problems

Hotel-Dieu Grace Health Care is spreading awareness about the signs of mental illness to encourage people to assist those around them.

Dr. Sonja Grbevski says a lot of work has been done to erase the stigma around mental illness so people don't feel ashamed getting the help they need.

"Mental Health is everybody's responsibility, whether it's a co-worker, a community member, a neighbour. It doesn't have to be very much in that formal process it can be very much a non-traditional approach," says Grbevski.

Grbevski says just being there for someone and offering assistance is the right first step. The second step is to reach out to services that can help the individual.

Local organizations and service providers met for Mental Health Awareness Week to discuss how they can align services for residents in the community.
