New Idea For Colchester Harbour

Colchester-area town councillor Bill Caixeiro wants to see the harbour building's top floor used as a community centre, but the rest of council isn't on board.

"I just think it would be a better opportunity," says Caixeiro.

After a request for proposals to operate the Colchester Harbour building turned up nothing, council decided to send out another RFP looking for potential operators to move in.

St. Clair College had submitted a letter to the town showing some interest in the property, but decided against pursuing it further.

Caixeiro thinks instead of trying the same thing again, a community centre could work well on the south shore.

"I think it wouldn't be used necessarily like the community centre in Harrow is used, but I believe would attract things such as small weddings, or showers or stags," says Caixeiro, feeling the space is well situated to attract such events. "A great view to the lake and just a nice place."

The second floor space of the harbour building hasn't been open to the public for six years.

Since 2001 the town has leased the building to five different proponents using the space for restaurants that didn't work out and in most cases had the town cutting rent or pursuing legal action for outstanding payments.
