University Workers Ratify Three-Year Deal

Office staff, skilled trades workers and technicians at the University of Windsor have voted in favour of a new three-year deal by a margin of 96%.

CUPE Local 1393 President Dean Roy says it's a fair deal.

"It's got some wage improvements and some minor benefit improvements," he says. "We didn't think it was a terrific deal, but it was enough to keep the members happy."

Roy wishes it had greater protections for workers against the contracting out of services, and says it's something he'll pursue at the next round of bargaining.

"Definitely. It was on the table this round. It was on the table the round before that," he says.

Three years ago, the workers were on strike for five weeks, and Roy thinks that may have influenced the way some members voted.

"Everyone was on the street last time; definitely didn't want to do it again but were prepared to if we needed to," says Roy. "I think management came to the table as well with the same expectations. They were hoping to get a contract and not have a work stoppage again."

The union represents 275 employees.
