The cost to dig out a new cell of the regional landfill is coming in nearly $30,000 under budget.
SLR Contracting handled the project — expected to be a $6.022-million bill.
Lakeshore Mayor and member of the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority says it wasn't a simple project.
"There's much more to it than just digging it out," says Bain. "There's piping that goes in there, there's stone that goes in the bottom, there's filter cloth; all the system that deals with the leachate."
Construction of the new cell at the landfill began last year with the first waste being dumped in this past March.
There are four more cells yet to be opened at the landfill and Bain knows residents don't want to see them dug out in any kind of hurry.
"They want to keep this landfill knowing that it took ten years to site it and certainly the costs haven't gone down; citing a new landfill is going to cost millions of dollars," says Bain.
The landfill is expected to be able to keep taking garbage until 2040.
