Poisoned Cats Prompt OSPCA Probe

The OSPCA is now investigating a string of alleged cat poisonings in Chatham.

Earlier this month, cat rescue group Big Fix told BlackburnNews.com as many as five cats were poisoned in the area of Edgar St. in Chatham. While the OSCPA can't give away much information about the alleged incidents, officials say they are looking into the situation.

"In cases with poisoning it is extremely difficult for our investigators to find the culprit," says Inspector Brandon James. "Those things have to be seen, there has to be witnesses. There's a lot of information that has to be gathered in cases such as this because the animal can't tell us who did it."

It's still unclear if the poisonings were on purpose or accidental. James adds residents can inadvertently hurt pets through the use of pesticides.

"Cats do roam, they hop fences and they do enter into people's yards," says James. "A cat that's wandered into a neighbour's yard a block away could endanger itself."

Signs of pet poisonings include vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and nosebleeds. Anyone who sees these symptoms should contact the OSPCA at 416-310-SPCA (7722)
