The province's move to end fees for child care waitlists isn't going to help parents in Windsor-Essex just yet — but maybe down the line.
Debbie Cercone, the City of Windsor's executive director of housing and children services, says waitlists for daycare spaces in the region aren't a major issue at the moment. However, she says there have been wait lists in the past and feels it could happen again.
"We are certainly seeing an increase in need related to child care," says Cercone. "Our numbers in the last six months have increased which tells us people are working, and people are going to school."
Cercone feels the move by the province is more targeted to the Greater Toronto Area where there are thousands of families paying to be on daycare waitlists.
"We have had waitlists in the past, but certainly, not to the degree our colleagues perhaps in Toronto would experience," says Cercone.
The government announced the move on Tuesday while the fee ban takes effect September 1, 2016.
