Amherstburg Sets Budget Target

Amherstburg councillors are looking for a 2% increase at most for the 2017 budget.

Administration has been tasked with bringing back options that will see that target met.

The town's chief administrative officer, John Miceli, says the town's financial ship has been righted after recent financial issues and is ready to deliver another prudent budget.

"We've been on track with this council and administration for the last two years," says Miceli. "We've taken all the necessary steps to put the town in the right financial order and going forward we're going to continue to do that."

The 2017 budget will be the third put together while Miceli has served as CAO and he says the town is on track to have an operating surplus for the 2015-2016 financial year.

In reaching the 2% target, Miceli says there are a few key issues needing to be addressed.

"The fire department and some of the issues [there] that's been well publicized," says Miceli. "We have our annual operation, we've got some salary increases that we have to deal with."

Councillor Diane Pouget raised some concern over the single day set aside for public input, but Miceli says there will be five days in all for residents to give their thoughts on the budget factoring in all budget-related meetings.

"Five days is a significant amount of time when you compare it to other municipalities. We allow the stakeholders and the residents to input into the budget process quite a bit," says Miceli.

The public information session is scheduled for November 26 while budget deliberations run from November 29 to December 1.

The town expects to see the budget passed December 12.
