Preparing For The Construction Of New Bridge

About $160-million of work is currently being completed to prepare the site of future Gordie Howe International Bridge.

The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority invited media on a tour of the site of the Canadian point of entry to show that progress is, in fact, being made.

WDBA President Michael Cautillo says the work includes bringing in about 1-million tonnes of infill for soil settlement and the relocation of hydro lines and other utilities on both sides of the border.

"I'm extremely proud of the progress that we've been able to accomplish in the very short time frame and there is visible and demonstrative progress on the Canadian site," says Cautillo.

Andy Doctoroff, the point person to the project on the US side of the border, says they've acquired about half of the necessary parcels of land.

"We started approximately a year ago, we are where we expected to be and as a result, there is no delay," says Doctoroff.

The bridge authority refused to answer questions about the pending RFP for the private consortium to build the actual bridge. The RFP was supposed to be released early in 2016.

Cautillo says it's important that the work they are doing now is completed before handing the site over to the builder.
