In honour of it's centennial the Windsor Rotary Club 1918 is developing a dedicated plaza along Windsor's waterfront.
The plaza will be located at the foot of the civic esplanade between Goyeau and McDougall St. and will tell the story of Rotary service.
"We want to put the Rotary footprint on it," says Chair Janet Kelly. "Perhaps the Rotary wheel, which is international, built into what we're doing. We do have some very important things about Rotary such as our service above self model and the four way test that we all live by that we may incorporate."
The total cost of the project is $385,000 which includes the construction, the purchasing of furniture and other park elements and a maintenance trust. The Windsor Rotary Club will pay for at least half of the cost and is looking for additional partners to help with the costs. The City of Windsor will pay the remaining amount.
"Not a lot of Rotary Clubs are 100 years old and so we're very excited about that and we wanted to do a really good job of coming up with something that would mean something, not just to our membership now, but in the future and to make a contribution to the city," says Kelly.
The design and idea process will begin immediately with construction starting in August 2017. The club plans to have the grand opening on May 12, 2018 when the Rotary international president is in Windsor for the centennial celebration.
