Unifor Presents New Proposal

The union representing support staff at the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board has presented the board with a new proposal.

"It's been a couple weeks, they've done nothing to talk about the issues or anything else so we thought we would give a comprehensive proposal today that we believe covers all of the issues," says Unifor Local 2458 President Bruce Dickie.

He says the union is prepared to discuss the proposal with the school board immediately to resolve the strike. Dickie says if the board is not prepared to discuss the offer maybe they should take another action to end the strike.

"Why don't they arbitrate? If they are so concerned that they're right and their position is right then lets take it in front of an arbitrator, end this strike and have it resolved there which ultimately will be the way to go if the school year gets in jeopardy ," says Dickie.

A representative from the WECDSB says they are currently reviewing the proposal.

"We have received the union’s offer and are currently assessing it, and will consult with the mediator who has been assigned to this matter to determine whether it warrants a call for both parties to return to the bargaining table," says WECDSB communications coordinator Stephen Fields.

Around 370 members have been on strike since October 17. The two sides have not met since October 7.
