The Windsor Police Service has a lower charge withdrawal rate than the rest of the province.
The service looked at the statistics over the last 12 years after a report published in the Globe and Mail stated Ontario police forces were laying too many charges and not getting convictions.
According to the article, 43% of charges laid in Ontario are either withdrawn or stayed. In Windsor only 34% of charges are withdrawn.
But Windsor Police Chief Al Frederick says that doesn't mean officers are making frivolous charges. He says often times there are multiple charges for a single offence and they only get a conviction for one of them.
"For example there's two charges related to every impaired driving case, exceed and impaired, only one conviction can be found so the other one is withdrawn. So that's typically what happens and that's what these cases are," says Frederick.
Statistics show that Windsor police register convictions on at least one count in 85% of all criminal cases.
