The community is once again coming together to mark the anniversary of the murder of 14 women on the campus of Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal.
This is the 16th year Unifor Local 444 Women's Committee has used the day to bring awareness to violence against women and the work being done to fight it.
"We really want to make sure that everybody is treated fairly, equally. We want to stop all violence and all forms of violence against women," says Sue McKinnon, chair person for Unifor Local 444's women's committee.
During the ceremony the names of the 14 women were read along with Lori Dupont's and Marylou- two local women who lost their lives in a violent way.
Mckinnon says this year the committee is bringing awareness to a bill they are fighting for that will give women ten days of paid leave to get out of a violent domestic situation and settle into a safe place.
"So that women can go and do their counselling, they can go to the doctors, they can look for another shelter or home to live in, they might have to go to court. This would give them the flexibility to go and do that stuff and at the same time not lose their jobs over it," says McKinnon.
The committee also continues to fight for the missing and murdered aboriginal women across the country.
The University of Windsor also conducted a moment of silence this morning and will hold a candlelight vigil Tuesday evening.
