Students Donate Hats And Mats

Students at H.J. Lassaline Catholic School in Windsor handed out hats and mats to two local organizations.

As part of the school project, students made hats for LeeLee Hats and mats out of milk bags for Street Help Windsor.

Parent council organizer Sarah Gallant says she is proud of what this group has accomplished in just two months.

"We have too many homeless people in the city here and they need anything that we can give them and if it's something that we can do ourselves then we should," says Gallant.

The school donated over 380 hats and ten mats -- all made by the group of students during recesses.

"We had the 7s and 8s, we trained them first as leaders and then they were helping the younger kids, teaching them and mentoring so it was pretty awesome," says Gallant.

There were close to 70 students involved in the project, many of whom are eager to continue making hats and mats to make an annual donation.

"There's so many students involved in this and so much dedication on the part of the school and commitment from the school. It's awesome, we're looking forward to it being a regular thing to be a part of," says Tracey Summerfield, co-founder of LeeLee Hats.

LeeLee Hats has been collecting yarn and hats for newborns and those in need for six years in the community. To date it`s estimated they've donated over 90,000 hats.
