Should Windsor Expand Open Streets To Four Events?

Riding on the success of last year's Open Streets Festival, one Windsor councillor would like to expand it to four events from two.

The City of Windsor submitted a list of events for a Canada 150 grant, including Open Streets and was approved for $200,000.

Rino Bortolin says holding four events could cost the city up to $90,000, and sponsors could pick up the rest of the cost.

"I do think this is the type of event that lends itself perfectly to sponsorship," he says. "It's a great feel-good story for the community. It's a great event to attach your name to."

While winter months are out, Bortolin says Windsor has lots of warm weather.

"Every warm month starting in April which would mean six to seven, April, May, June, July, August, September, even October. That's probably a little out of reach for this year," says Bortolin. "Good expansion rate this year would be to host four, June, July, August, September."

And maybe moving it to other neighbourhoods.

"The route last year was great -- and it probably makes sense to stay consistent, but there's also a desire to bring it other neighbourhoods. You know, bring it the Pillette and Riverside area."

The next step is to bring a report to the Planning, Heritage and Economic Development Standing Committee. Bortolin hopes that happens in March or early April. After that, the proposal will go before city council which will make the decision.
