New Flag Policy Approved

The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board is implementing a new flag policy for its elementary and secondary schools.

The new flag policy stipulates that the flag pole outside schools will be solely dedicated to the Canadian flag. Any request to have a special interest flag inside the schools will go through the director of education.

Board Chair Barb Holland says they did not want to exclude any flag in the policy.

"We chose a mid-line , balanced approach so that everybody in our community will feel safe and included when they come through our doors," says Holland.

Some in the community wanted to limit flags in the schools to the Canadian flag, the provincial flag and the papal flag.

"This policy embraces who we are as a Catholic people. If you look back to the whole root word of Catholic means everyone and we are a welcoming faith based community," says Holland.

Changes in the policy come after a student requested to put up a Pride flag.
