GECDSB Offering International Diploma Program

Two local public schools will soon be accepting applications for the International Baccalaureate program being launched next year.

The International Baccalaureate program will be offered at Riverside Secondary School and Leamington District Secondary School, and is open to all students no matter their location.

Program coordinator Lisa Jeffrey says the specialized diploma gives students an incredible advantage when they go to university.

"Academics will need to be a priority for them so fairly strong marks would reflect that. We want students who are well rounded, not one dimensional students, we want students who enjoy working with friends, like to be physically active, creative, enjoy community outreach projects and working with our community partners," says Jeffrey.

For the 2017-2018 school year both schools will offer the IB preparatory classes for grade nine students and the program will expand as those students proceed through high school.

Applications are due on February 15, after their Grade 8 report cards for the first semester are complete. Those interested in the program will then go through an interview process to ensure the program is a good fit for them.

"We just kind of counsel them to make sure it's what they want and that they have the academic strength already in place," says Jeffrey.
