Sandwich Library Passes Another Hurdle

The new Sandwich Town Library is moving forward again after receiving approval from the city's heritage committee.

The committee approved a design for the former fire hall that includes new front doors and the addition of a tower on the former bell tower.

The heritage committee debated between two designs for the tower. The architect for the project presented a slanted glass tower, while heritage planner John Calhoun recommended more vertical sides to the tower. In the end, the heritage committee decided on the architect's design.

"What we're trying to do is, put a new element on the structure that makes it look great and will be useful. People will be able to go up there, and have tours, look at the local area," says Peter Frise, library board chair.

The design options originally came before the heritage committee at a meeting last month, but was deferred. It has put the project about nine weeks behind schedule, but Frise is confident they'll be able to make up the time.

"Every project has a schedule and I think this whole thing came as a bit of a surprise to us, because it's not actually a heritage element of the design, so it has thrown us off our pace just a little bit," says Frise.

The new library is expected to be open in August 2018.
