Engineering Award For Gordie Howe International Bridge

It isn't built yet, and the Gordie Howe International Bridge is winning awards.

It won the 2017 Engineering Project of the Year Award at the 10th Global Infrastructure Leadership Forum in Montreal.

The bridge between Windsor and Detroit is expected to open to traffic in 2022. Proposed designs include a cable-stayed bridge and a suspension cable bridge.

"The importance of this project has been recognized by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Donald Trump, and now, the engineering aspects of the project are being recognized by industry peers," says Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Amarjeet Sohi.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder also expressed his congratulations saying, "I would like to thank the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority staff, its board of directors, the international authority and our Michigan team. These individuals have worked hard and as a result, have accomplished so much in a short amount of time."

Earlier this week, the bridge authority announced a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists would be included in the design. The bridge will connect bike paths along the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Pkwy. and bike trails in Detroit.
