Electricians and electrical apprentices at Greater Essex Electrical 2016 Inc. are the newest members of Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 53.
The union is one of the fastest-growing companies in Canada with 15 member centres. It represents 60,000 workers in almost every sector, according to a release from CLAC.
The workers recently voted in favour of their first collective agreement, providing journeypersons with secured wage rate and annual increases. It also offers them compensation for travel time, safety footwear and tool allowances.
"There were a few points of difference across the table, but more importantly in this case, management and the union found a way to work them out," says Local 53 representative Roger Grootenboer.
