Wide Range Possible For Williams Sentence

The sentence for Andrew Williams convicted of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm could be varied.

In January Williams was convicted of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm in relation to the accident that killed two of his children and seriously injured himself and two others. The judge did not find him criminally negligent. In June 2012, Williams was driving his van with his four children on board when he collided with an oncoming CP train.

Defense lawyer Laura Joy is asking for a suspended sentence. She says Williams and his family have already suffered a terrible tragedy and nothing the court does will change that suffering.

"How is justice served by putting this male in jail?" Joy asked the court during sentencing submissions today.

But Assistant Crown Attorney Walter Costa is looking for an 18-36 month sentence plus probation and a five year driving prohibition. Both the conductor and the engineer submitted victim impact statements in the case stating they continue to suffer consequences from the tragedy they witnessed that day.
