You've heard of Take Your Daughter To Work Day. How about Take Your Parents To School Day?
While Friday is a PA Day for most kids in Windsor-Essex, some at Marlborough Public School in Windsor will be taking their moms and dads to class.
Principal Ron Brown hopes the event will demystify how the new math is taught.
Kindergarten students will show off their math skills using games, while children in Grades 1 and 2 will demonstrate how working with manipulatives further basic numeracy. In Grades 4 to 6, parents will see how robotics are integrated into the curriculum, and the parents of more senior students will learn new strategies to help their children with their homework.
"We've also included our music program because there's tons of math in music," says Brown. "We've got gym activities and helping parents to see how kids are even learning math in Phys. ed. classes."
Brown says the response from parents has been very exciting with up to 300 mothers, fathers and students signed up to take part.
The event is a first for Marlborough and the Greater Essex County District School Board, but Brown hopes it catches on.
"I would love to see this move into other schools -- especially in an area where parents are sometimes disengaged with their school. Perhaps it was something they may have struggled with," he says. "I want parents to come on in and see how excited our children are."
The event gets underway at 10am.
