Start Your Engines! It's Grand Prix Weekend

Organizers of this year's Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix hope to top 100,000 attendees for the first time in the race's history this weekend.

The event got underway on Friday, but the biggest crowds are expected Saturday and Sunday.

Last year, 95,000 people walked through the gate on Belle Isle, and organizers think attendance would have topped 100,000 had it not been for cool temperatures and rain showers throughout the weekend.

The track is considered one of the most challenging on the F-1 circuit; 2.3mi or 3.7km on a street course that includes tight turns.

The Chevrolet Dual I race is Saturday at 3:30pm and the big race, the Chevrolet Dual II is at 3:30pm on Sunday.

This year's Grand Marshall is TJ Lang, a new signing with the Detroit Lions and Super Bowl champion when he played for the Green Bay Packers.

Entertainment on Belle Isle this weekend includes Montgomery Gentry on Saturday, and on Sunday, Jody Watley featuring Shalamar Reloaded.

The Grand Prix has raised $13-million for improvements in Belle Isle and contributes an estimated $45-million in economic benefit for the Metro Detroit region.
