A popular downtown Windsor lunch-and-beer joint is opening early Thursday to allow customers to witness history.
Snackbar-B-Q, located on Chatham St. E off Ouellette Ave., will be open 90 minutes earlier than its usual 11:30am opening time so customers can watch the U.S. congressional hearing involving former FBI director James Comey. This hearing may have serious implications on the administration of President Donald Trump.
Snackbar owner Mark Boscariol says the 10am opening time for the hearings was his customers' idea.
"We have a lot of politically astute customers who sit at the bar commenting about the politics of the day," says Boscariol. "And it was their idea. What we did was we kept building on it."
Boscariol says there was plenty of discussion back and forth about what the business could do surrounding the Comey hearing. He also says many of his customers have strong opinions about what's happening with our American neighbours.
"We have a lot of people over the bar who say 'Trump is a freak show' and everyone's watching him," says Boscariol. "This is going to be the most-watched congressional hearing of all time. We have a lot of Windsorites and a lot of Canadians that are watching too. It's been quite the spectacle and we want to keep it going."
Comey, who was fired by Trump as FBI director over his handling of an email scandal involving former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and the bureau's investigation into possible interference by Russia in the 2016 presidential election, is being called to testify before Congress.
Boscariol says the hearing could start answering many questions his customers have.
"Is it going to lead to impeachment?" says Boscariol. "It's very big over there and I think there's just so much. This is just one brick in the wall with the Russian conspiracy so we'll learn if he's under investigation or learn if there's more going on."
The bar is offering coffee and menu specials when it opens at 10am.
