Police Investigating Sudden Death

A downtown homeowner received a terrible shock Friday morning when they walked out of their front door and discovered a dead man.

The Windsor Police Service is currently investigating the incident on Dougall Ave. near Elliott St. as a "sudden death" but are not calling it suspicious at this time. Police say the homeowner knew the deceased man.

Windsor police Sergeant Steve Betteridge says Windsor fire crews attended the scene because a white substance was found on and around the body. He says they had to remove a specimen and decontaminate the scene before the death investigation could continue.

"Once we are able to safely do that then the next steps will come into play and one of those steps will be having a coroner involved and then obviously moving forward with a cause of death," says Betteridge.

Police say an autopsy has been ordered to determine how the man died.

Dougall Ave. was closed near the home for several hours to allow the hazardous materials team to remove a specimen of the white powder. The road was reopened around 5pm.

Police say there is no threat to public safety at this time.

"Because it's all active, what I can say is what we have so far -- no foul play is suspected," says Betteridge.
