Three Injured In Crash Involving SUV And School Bus

Three people have been transported to the hospital after a crash in Amherstburg involving an SUV and a school bus.

It is the third collision in Essex County in the past week involving a school bus, but this time the bus did not have any students on board.

On Monday, a school bus carrying two students was hit by a car on County Rd. 22 at West Pike Creek Rd.  The driver of the bus suffered minor injuries, and an 18-year-old Windsor man is charged with careless driving.

Last Thursday, a Leamington man was charged after a tractor-trailer rear-ended a school bus on Walker Rd. in Tecumseh.  Three children were sent to hospital as a precaution.

Amherstburg police Constable Shawn McCurdy says the two vehicles collided in the intersection of Sandwich St. and Alma St. around 8:20am. The force of the collision pushed the SUV onto its side.

Inside, were three young adults, one male and two female, who suffered minor injuries.

The school bus sustained significant damage, but the driver was not hurt.

McCurdy says the investigation is ongoing and charges are expected to be laid.

"We always ask our drivers to follow the rules of the road. Slow down. Pay attention," he says. "Buses, especially, they're carrying precious cargo which is everybody's children. They are bright and yellow for a reason."
