GECDSB Hiring New Teachers

More teachers will be hired at the Greater Essex County District School Board due to an increase in enrollment.

The public board is expecting over 400 more students in the 2017-2018 school year, compared to the current year.

That will result in an additional 29 full-time elementary school teachers, and 19 full-time secondary school teachers.

"At this point, it's projected enrollment based on our student registration, so we're hoping that those students will remain within the seats of our secondary schools in September, says Dina Salinitri, superintendent of education responsible for secondary staff.

The full-time teachers will be hired from the long-term occasional list. The board will also be hiring new teachers to fill the spaces on the occasional teacher roster.

"We will be looking at conducting interviews beginning of July to be able to hire additional occasional teachers to our occasional teacher roster," says Salinitri.

The additional teaching positions were approved as part of the 2017-2018 operational budget of $443,496,673.
