The Town of Amherstburg is looking for public input on its new draft open-air burning bylaw tabled at Monday night's council meeting.
The new bylaw develops a permit system for having fires and sets out new guidelines pertaining to lot size.
Fire Chief Bruce Montone says their goal is to update the current bylaw and educate people on fire safety.
"The new bylaw is going to take into consideration, frankly common practices throughout the county and elsewhere in the province that would permit some, with limitations, recreational fires," says Montone.
Currently, Amherstburg's bylaw only allows fires on a working farm.
The town will hold three public meetings before finalizing the bylaw. The first will be held August 17, at the Libro Centre, the second will be September 12, at fire station #3 and the final meeting will be held September 26 at fire station #2. An online survey will also be available on the town's website starting on Thursday.
