Horwitz Hoping To Save Pelissier Retail Space

Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Area Chair Larry Horwitz is hoping to change some councilors' minds about the Pelissier St. parking garage with a tour of a parking garage in Michigan.

He's taking a bus to tour "the Z" parking garage in Detroit on Wednesday. It encompasses 1,300 parking spots and 37,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space.

"The whole garage is an attraction and a destination for the Detroit area and we're losing so much in Windsor by not being progressive and not figuring out how to make the downtown core more attractive," says Horwitz.

Windsor City Council voted to revert the retail space of the Pelissier St. parking garage to parking at a meeting last November.

"What they're going to do is just create a dead zone all along the downtown core area. When people are trying to build their core areas, we're destroying them," says Horwitz.

Quotes to revert the space back to parking have come in close to double the estimated price. Some councilors hope this could mean a reconsideration of the decision.  The report to request the reward of tender for the work is going to council on August 8.
