Two mosquitoes capable of carrying the Zika virus have been found in a Windsor area mosquito trap.
However, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says they both tested negative for Zika and West Nile viruses.
Last year, the health unit trapped 17 mosquitoes of the same species but they also tested negative for Zika and West Nile.
The health unit says this year’s discovery may be a new mosquito colony or last year’s colony that has been able to survive in Windsor because of the mild winter and the current hot temperatures.
For Zika virus transmission to occur, the mosquito needs to feed on an infected person then feed upon another susceptible person.
These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters, with heavy activity in the early morning and late afternoon.
The health unit continues to investigate.
