Enrollment is up at both the Catholic and public school boards in the region.
There are currently 13,101 students enrolled in the elementary level at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board. That's about 200 more students than was projected in the spring. At the secondary level there are currently 7,363 students enrolled, around 88 more students then projected.
"In an era of declining enrollment, to be able to be above your projections, that's a win any way you measure that. The nice part about it to is that it's translated into hiring," says Stephen Fields, communications coordinator with the WECDSB.
As a result of the extra students 16 elementary teachers and 8 secondary teachers were hired, and 52 teachers were added to the occasional list.
At the Greater Essex County District School Board, elementary enrollment is up 626 students from this time last year. That's 659 more students than projected last spring. There are a total of 23,925 students enrolled at the elementary level at the GECDSB.
As a result, the board has hired 74 teachers from the occasional teachers' list, and a corresponding number of new teachers will be hired to fill the occasional teacher roster.
Secondary school enrollment figures have not been finalized at the GECDSB.
