High School Students Facebook Live With Kathleen Wynne

There was an unexpected guest during a Facebook Live chat between Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and Grade 10 civics students Friday morning -- Premier Kathleen Wynne.

Wynne is in Windsor for a meeting Friday afternoon between Federal Transport Minister, Marc Garneau, premiers, and state governors at the Art Gallery of Windsor, and Dilkens insisted the impromptu visit was unplanned.

Wynne spoke to the students from St. Joseph's, F.J. Brennan, and Holy Names Catholic High Schools about the importance of women in politics and encouraged female students not to be afraid to get involved.

She pointed to how the women made a difference in the way the province rolled out its policies to fight sexual assault and harassment.

"There's a lot of talk right now about sexual assault and violence, and about a year or so ago, we brought forward a policy, It's Never Okay, and put more money into violence women services. And, I had male colleagues come up to me and say 'you know, you're going farther and doing more than we would be doing if he didn't have women at the table,'" she said.

Wynne also spoke about how she entered politics, saying she believes public education is a cornerstone of our democracy and had an interest in it when her children were in school.

"I decided I that I wanted to be part of a school board. I ran for school board first, and then that led me into provincial politics," Wynne said.
