If You Get This Text Message, Ignore It

Enwin Utilities says it has had three calls from customers verifying the information they received in a text message.

The message claims to be from Hydro One and asks the receiver to tap a link.

Instead of going to the link, the three customers called Enwin instead.

"We don't send text messages to our customers," says Enwin Manager of Corporate Communications, Barbara Peirce Marshall. "This is the first time we have heard about this kind of fraud attempt in our area, so calling Enwin was the right thing to do."

Enwin has told Hydro One and Windsor Police Services about the scam. It also checked with other utilities across the province, some of which have had similar experiences.

"Many people have learned to be on the lookout for email fraud attempts," says Peirce Marshall. "So, criminals have found a new way to defraud the public. With so many people on mobile devices, we need to raise awareness of this new danger."

Enwin reminds customers they should never provide personal information in response to a scam text, email, or phone call."

If you have received a text message, email, or call you are not sure about regarding your utilities, call Enwin at 519-255-2727, or Windsor Police.
