Windsor Man Makes Guitar For Biggest Entertainment Acts

Some of your favourite music acts may have a connection to Windsor, or at least their guitars may.

When Phil Culleton is not working as a mechanic for the City of Windsor, he's crafting custom-made guitars for acts like Bon Jovi, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Guns 'N Roses, Luke Bryan, and Kenny Chesney.

Culleton started making guitars 14 years ago when he had trouble finding a left-handed guitar he liked.

"For 30 years I wanted to play guitar and the only thing they had out, there were right-handed guitars. So, I ended up buying a left-handed one at a pawn shop," he remembers. "I hated it after about two weeks. I just kinda took that one apart, took measurements. That one wasn't the best one, but with each build, you just get better and better."

Since then, he has started his own business called PSE Custom Guitars in his garage. Soon, he was noticed by artists in Nashville and Atlanta.

Typically, he says a guitar can take anywhere from one to six weeks to make. Acoustic guitars can take up to two months to build.

It is not an easy business, nor a vocation for the thin-skinned.

"You can do a couple of guitars, and they love them, and they can hate them three weeks later and then all of the sudden you're old news," he says. "They have hundreds of people that will jump into my spot to make them something just as good or better."

Culleton says he has liked everyone he has worked with, but the highlight for him is being allowed to go up on stage.

"I was out in Boston with Kenny Chesney in the summer," he says. "I see like 80,000 fans. I'm always up on stage where the guitar tech stands. It's always exciting to see that."
