Over 100 Charges Laid In Essex County Traffic Blitz

A series of weekend traffic initiatives in Windsor-Essex has resulted in over 100 charges.

The traffic blitz took place on Friday and Sunday and involved officers from the Ontario Provincial Police, Windsor police, and Amherstburg police services. This has resulted in dozens of drivers charged with assorted offences.

The initiatives were set up in several locations across Essex County.

The first phase took place on Friday with radar enforcement set up near the Hwy 401 and Manning Rd intersection in the county, as well as around E.C. Row and Central Ave in Windsor.

Officers stopped over 100 vehicles and issued over 100 citations. Among those, five were charged with having expired insurance or no insurance, two were charged with driving while suspended, three for stunt driving and one arrested for a controlled drug and substances charge.

Windsor and Amherstburg officers teamed up Friday evening to conduct RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checkpoints in six locations across both municipalities. Two drivers received tickets and two more were given roadside sobriety tests.

The blitz concluded on Sunday with Windsor police and the OPP concentrating on Hwy. 401 in Essex County.

During that phase, 32 drivers were stopped for speeding, six were charged with following too closely, one suspended driver was charged and two other drivers were stopped for other violations.

One driver was charged for driving 145 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone.
