Supervised Injection Site In Windsor?

Would the Windsor community benefit from a supervised injection site for opioid users?

Completing a feasibility study to answer that question is one of many recommendations coming from the task force created earlier this year to address the opioid crisis.

"It's not as simple as you saying we need a supervised injection site or whether the community would benefit from it. There has to be a lot of processes that we have to go through before we get to that point," says Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

Ahmed says it's definitely something they are considering.

"We are actively working on this file and the community will have their input and their buy-in before any of these decisions are made for a supervised injection site," says Ahmed.

He says there's no doubt the city is being affected by the nation wide opioid-crisis. Statistic show the number of opioid related deaths and hospitalizations in Windsor-Essex is far above the provincial average.

The full strategy for addressing opioid use in the community will be released in January.
