True Fitness, a gym and personal training facility, is opening at 443 Ouellette Ave. in August. The building formerly housed a Shopper's Drug Mart but has been vacant for the last ten years.
Owner Louis Mendez says he was really pulled to the downtown.
"There's currently no location downtown servicing this area with what we have to offer which is a co-ed gym, a personal training facility, a facility that focuses on servicing our clients and providing that friendly environment," says Mendez.
Mendez will be taking advantage of the Downtown Windsor BIA rent subsidization program. For the first year in operation the DWBIA will give True Fitness $625 towards rent.
"This is one of the four or five needs that we have picked to supplement and bring downtown in the core area," says DWBIA Chair Larry Horwitz. "We're still looking at others, we're still looking at a butcher, a bakery and a hardware store. But this fills a huge need."
Mendez was originally looking to locate on the main floor of the Pelissier St. Parking Garage. However when the City of Windsor turned down his offer he began looking for other locations.
