Statistics Canada says last month's national unemployment rate is the lowest since it adopted the current method of calculating the monthly benchmark.
For the third consecutive month, Canada's economy added enough jobs to lower the rate, which now sits at 5.7%. December's result is down 0.2% from November.
The agency says 79,000 jobs were added to the economy; 55,000, part-time. A total of 423,000 jobs were added in all of last year, pushing the national rate down 1.2% since December 2016.
Locally, Windsor's unemployment rate fell again in December to 5.5%, a dip of 0.1% from November.
However, the labour participation rate in December only climbed 0.2% over the past year and stood at 60.2% in Windsor. Statistics Canada says the employment rate, those with work, was 57.2%, down slightly from the year before.
In comparison with the next biggest city in the region, Windsor's rate was lower than London's which stood at 5.8% last month, down from 6.1% in November.
Ontario's unemployment rate ended 2017 at 5.5%, down 0.9% over the year. About 176,000 jobs were added to the provincial economy, and Statistics Canada says almost all those gains were full-time.
