UPDATE: Gas Leak At Amhestburg School Resolved

The Amherstburg Fire Department says a natural gas leak at Amherstburg Public School has been found.

The department tweeted shortly after 9am Thursday that a natural gas leak was reported at the school on Hamilton Dr.

Students have been transferred to General Amherst High School until dismissal time at 3pm.

Union Gas spokesperson Andrea Thass tells BlackburnNewsWindsor.com that the utility responded twice to a natural gas complaint, the first Wednesday evening, and the second Thursday.

"Our investigations did not detect any natural gas leaks or natural gas in the air," says Thass. "It is believed that a valve in a science lab used for Bunsen burners may have been left on."

Amherstburg Public School remains closed. Thass says crews took advantage of the closure to perform gas system maintenance, including the disconnection of natural gas that supplies the science lab from the roof.

The Greater Essex County District School Board will update students and parents when it will reopen, though spokesman Scott Scantlebury tells BlackburnNewsWindsor.com that he expects the school to be open Friday.

No injuries were reported.
