UPDATE: ERCA Issues Flood Warning

Howling winds and storms crisscrossing the region have prompted a flood warning for the local region.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) upgraded the flood watch on Friday to a warning due to high winds and strong storms that moved through the area.

The warning is for the western shoreline of Pelee Island and the shoreline of the municipality of Leamington between Point Pelee National Park and the Leamington Marina.

Portions of the western shoreline of Pelee Island are currently being impacted by waves overtopping breakwall structures, according to ERCA. Wave splash with debris is impacting portions of the travelled roadway including the potential for the erosion of the road shoulder at certain locations and breakwall damage.

ERCA also says portions of the shoreline along Point Pelee Drive in Leamington are currently being impacted by waves overtopping breakwalls resulting in private property and road flooding.

Southwest winds are forecast to have sustained speeds around 45 km/hr to 55 km/hr, with potential gusts up to 90 km/hr to 100 km/hr, according to Environment Canada.

Nearshore erosion is possible with waves overtopping the breakwalls, which can send rocks and debris flying onto adjacent land, says ERCA.

The area is still dealing with wind damage from a storm two weeks ago. The Pelee Island shoreline sustained breakwall damage and shoreline erosion.

ERCA urges people to avoid the area during high wind events unless travel is absolutely necessary. Slippery banks, waves overtopping breakwalls and standing water can be dangerous.

The flood watch is in effect until 9am Saturday.
