Windsor Starts Tour Service To Peche Island Wednesday (VIDEO)

If you are looking for something to do this summer that is close to home, have you considered a trip to Peche Island?

The City of Windsor starts tour service on the island in the Detroit River Wednesday after buying a boat to ferry tourists to and from the natural and historical attraction.

The cost is $5 per seat, but children under two-years ride free.

Anyone interested in touring the island is asked to call 519-948-3383 to book a seat in advance because the boat can only seat six passengers at a time, and visitors will be limited to 12 each hour.

Peche Island was purchased in 1883 by Hiram Walker for use as a summer retreat. It was sold in 1907 to the Province of Ontario, and then to the City of Windsor 1999. It is now a naturalized park with walking trails.

The City of Windsor recently improved many of the features on the island including the dock.

The shuttle service will operate every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting until October 3.

The first shuttle leaves at 10am from Lakeview Park Marina and continues every hour until the last trip from the marina at 2pm. The final shuttle back from the island is at 3:30pm.
