Health Officials Identify First Human Case Of West Nile This Season

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says it has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in the region this year.

Health officials call it a reminder for residents to take precautions to protect themselves.

Earlier this week, the health unit reported six mosquito pools in Windsor-Essex tested positive for West Nile.

They recommend removing any standing water you may have around your property, use insect repellents with DEET, wearing light-coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants, and limiting how much time you spend outside at dusk and dawn.

The health unit has a policy of not identifying the victims of West Nile virus or the communities where they are living.

Most people with the virus do not even know they have it. Only 25% actually develop a fever, and less than 1% suffer neurological symptoms.
