Crews from Windsor Fire and Rescue tackled a fire at a Walkerville landmark Saturday.
Firefighters confirmed that there was fire activity at the historic Olde Walkerville Theatre shortly after 3:30pm Saturday. Witnesses say smoke appeared to come from the theatre about that time. Several fire trucks and a host of emergency vehicles appeared on scene within a few minutes.
Two of the glass doors to the theatre's main entrance were broken and the block had a heavy odour of smoke.
The fire was declared under control shortly after 4pm and out about 10 minutes later. There appeared to be no cosmetic damage to the exterior of the building or the marquee, though there appeared to be damage just inside the entrance doors to the lobby.
Windsor Fire said via Twitter that fire and smoke damage in the building is estimated at $15,000. Investigators remain on scene, but the fire at this time does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
The section of Wyandotte St. E. between Lincoln Rd. and Gladstone Ave. was closed while the investigation went on. It is now open.
